NOVI SAD

Novi Sad is a town on the river Danube, located in the middle of the Vojvodina part of Pannonia plain and is the second largest city in Serbia. It is located between the 19th and 20th degree of the eastern longitude and the 45th and 46th degree of the northern latitude, on 72 to 80 m of altitude.

Novi Sad is located on the international road, which connects Budapest and Vienna, Thessalonica, Athens, Bucharest and Istanbul… The highway E-72 (Budapest-Belgrade-Nis)  passes alongside Novi Sad while the highway E-70 (Zagreb-Belgrade) is in the close vicinity.  The average distance between Novi Sad and the neighboring countries (Hungary, Romania,  Croatia, Bosnia and Hercegovina) is 80 km while the nearest airport in Belgrade is 70 km away. The advantage of this town lies in its geo-strategic location.

Climate: Climate in the area of Novi Sad is moderate-continental. The town is located on 70-80 m altitude.

Temperature: The average annual temperature in the town is 10,9 °C. In winter, the average temperature is –1 °C and in July it is 21,6 °C.

Precipitation: Annual rainfall is 686 mm, and there are 122 rainy days.

Population: Novi Sad has 300 000 inhabitants (298 139 according to the census in 2002). Novi Sad is a multi-ethnic place (Serbs, Hungarians, Montenegrins, Slovaks, Ruthenia’s, Croats, Hebrews, Romany people and others) where national communities are equally presented in the political, public and cultural life.

Languages:

Serbian language and Cyrillic alphabet are officially used in the town. Hungarian, Slovakian and Ruthenia languages and their alphabets are also officially used according to the law and the specific decision of the town’s Assembly.

THE REPUBLIC OF SERBIA

Official name:  The Republic of Serbia. It contains two autonomous provinces: Vojvodina and Kosovo-Metohija.

 Area: 88,361 km²

Climate: Temperate continental climate, with a gradual transition between the four seasons of the year .

Population: 7,498.001 (the latest 2002. census, excluding Kosovo-Metohija)

Language: The official language is Serbian and the script in official use is Cyrillic, while Latin script is also used. In the areas inhabited by ethnic minorities, the languages and scripts of the minorities are in official use, as provided by law.

Capital: Belgrade (Beograd), with a population of 1,6 millions, is the administrative, economic and cultural centre of Serbia.

Religion: The main religion in Serbia is Christian Orthodox. There are also other religious communities in Serbia: Islamic, Roman Catholic, Protestant, Jewish and other.

Government: Democratic republic. The president and the parliament are elected every four years in general election. Current president of Serbia is Boris Tadic.

Currency: The monetary unit is the Dinar (CSD) - 1 Dinar = 100 Para. Coins: 50 Para, 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 Dinar

Power supply: 220 V, 50 Hz

Banks & Postal service: Most banks and post offices are open from 08.00 a.m. to 07.00 p.m. on weekdays and from 08.00 a.m. to  03.00 p.m. on Saturdays. On Sundays there is usually a designated bank or post office that maintains needed services.

 Hotels and accommodation: 295 hotels, 87 motels, 344 vacation complexes, mountains lodges and other accommodation facilities. Total number of beds is 88.598 (37.234 in hotels).

Shops: Food shops typically open at 06.00 a.m. and work until 09.00 p.m., both weekdays and Saturdays. Sundays they typically operate from 06.00 a.m. to 03.00 p.m. Everywhere, there are stores open 24 hours a day. Markets are opened every day from 06.00 a.m. to 05.00 p.m.

Credit cards: International credit cards Visa, Master Card, Diners and others are accepted in the majority of stores, hotels and restaurants.

Airports: Serbia has three international airports Belgrade Nikola Tesla (BEG), Niš Constantine the Great Airport (INI) and Priština International Airport (PRN).

Medical care: Hospitals and out-patient clinics typically work 24 hours a day. Private medical practices are common and emergency medical service is available everywhere 24 hours a day. Pharmacies are opened from 08.00 a.m. to 08.00 p.m. on working days and on Saturdays from 08.00 a.m. to 03.00 p.m. Each city has a pharmacy that is open on Sundays and throughout the night.

Telephones: To call Serbia from outside, the country code is +381. City codes are: Belgrade (0)11, Novi Sad (0)21, Niš (0)18 etc. For the international calls from Serbia dial 99 + code of the desired country + code for the city.

Internet: Serbia has 1.6 million internet users. Internet cafes are common in urban centers. Internet country code is .rs, with former country code .yu being phased out in 2007.

- Nationals provided holding all types of passports: Andorra, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Belarus, Bolivia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Czech Republic, Costa Rica, Croatia, Cuba, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Hungary, Holy See (Vatican), Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Israel, Japan, Latvia, Lichtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Malta, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Korea, Romania, San Marino, Seychelles, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, Sweden, Tunisia, United States of America.

- Nationals provided holding diplomatic, official passports and ordinary passports with indication "on business": Armenia, Azerbaijan, China, DPR Korea, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Russian Federation, Ukraine.

- Nationals provided holding diplomatic and official passports: Ecuador, Guinea, Pakistan, Peru, Turkey.

- Nationals provided holding diplomatic passports: Egypt

- Nationals provided holding ordinary passports: Mexico

Foreign nationals visiting Serbia who are required to obtain visas at the diplomatic or consular mission of the Serbia need:

  • Valid Passport;

  • Letter of invitation (verified by the competent Serbia authority) or an invitation by a company for a business visit or a receipt or authorized tourist company certifying that the travel arrangement has been paid for (letter of credit or other payment receipt);

  • Return ticket;

  • Proof of sufficient funds in hard currency and

  • Certificate that a health fund shall cover the medical costs in Serbia, if any.

Transit visa applicants are required to obtain the visa for the country they will enter after the transit through Serbia.
